At the Beginning of Trial Regarding Tax Evation
The first hearing of manga artist Erika Ikeda, 36, from Minami Ward, Fukuoka City, Japan accused of violating the Income Tax Act (simple non-declaration) by evading approximately 47 million yen in income tax by failing to report her income, took place on the 31st at the Fukuoka District Court (Judge Yuko Takeda). Ikeda, known by her pen name “Nekokurage,” admitted to the charges, stating, “I intended to file a cumulative tax return for several years.”
In its opening statement, the prosecution noted that Ikeda began her career as a manga artist in 2010 and was informed by acquaintances about the necessity of filing tax returns. Despite being aware of the need to file, she prioritized manga deadlines over tax filings. This behavior resulted in significant tax evasion over the years.
Background and Popularity of Nekokurage
Ikeda is the artist behind the manga adaptation of the popular novel “The Apothecary Diaries.” This series has gained immense popularity among anime and manga fans. The manga, serialized in “Monthly Big Gangan,” has been adapted into a TV anime, which aired from October 2023 to March 2024. Fans of the series are eagerly anticipating the second season, which is slated for release in 2025. This backdrop of popularity has intensified the public’s reaction to the tax evasion case.
The prosecution further highlighted that Ikeda had a history of missing tax return deadlines and filing multiple years’ worth of taxes at once. Testimonies from her editor pointed out that failing to comply with tax obligations could lead to the cancellation of her series, urging her to file tax returns properly. The original author of “The Apothecary Diaries” also advised Ikeda to consult a tax accountant to avoid such issues.
Details of the Case
Ikeda admitted to the charges during the trial on May 31. However, she stated her intention was not to evade taxes but to file a combined report for several years. The prosecution argued that Ikeda prioritized manga deadlines over tax filings and used the evaded funds for family home renovations. This claim suggests a deliberate attempt to misuse the funds that should have been paid as taxes.
According to the indictment, Ikeda had an income of approximately 260 million yen as a manga artist from 2019 to 2021, but failed to file her tax returns by the deadline, resulting in approximately 47 million yen in tax evasion. She has since paid the full amount, including delinquent taxes, showing her willingness to correct her past mistakes.
This case has stirred considerable discussion among anime and manga fans, reflecting the responsibilities of public figures in the entertainment industry. Fans of “The Apothecary Diaries” are disappointed but hopeful that Ikeda will learn from this experience and continue to contribute to the world of manga and anime. Her admission and subsequent actions to rectify the situation may serve as a reminder of the importance of tax compliance for all professionals, including those in creative fields.

Ikeda issued an apology on X (formerly Twitter) on April 1. The following is the full apology statement posted by Ikeda.
Regarding Tax Filings
I sincerely apologize for the current situation.
Previously, I was ignorant about taxes and neglected my tax filings. In 2022, I was instructed by the tax office to pay the principal tax, delinquent tax, and non-declaration additional tax, all of which I promptly paid. Since then, I have been working with a tax accountant to ensure proper filing and payment.
I fully accept the consequences of my ignorance and lack of study. More importantly, I am filled with remorse for causing inconvenience to everyone and disappointing all those who have supported me.
Moreover, I deeply regret my insincerity towards everyone who diligently fulfills their tax obligations. This will never happen again.
Please note that this matter is a personal issue related to Neko Kurage and has no connection to the original author of the work I am adapting or any other creators involved in the adaptation. I kindly ask that this distinction be made clear.
